Reading Workshop

In Reading, the workshop model is followed. A mini-lesson is taught and students read independently to apply the strategy that was taught during the mini-lesson. Students are provided leveled texts that are at or near their independent reading level. The teacher conferences with students to assess their decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Students will also work in guided reading groups, which consist of 2-4 students reading the same book together with teacher support.

Students will begin the year by building reading stamina. Students will practice reading their independent reading books for an increased amount of time, while maintaining focus. Students will practice predicting what their book will be about by reading the title, looking at the front cover, and reading the back cover. Students will write in their reading journals daily and respond to comprehension questions about their books.
